Before you dive into the actual activities for each surah, spend some time reciting the surah together. There are two Surahs in this Juz, Surah Baqarah’s last part, Ayah 253-286, and the first part of Surah Al-E-Imran’s Ayah 1-91. If this is not possible, listen to the surah on a digital device. Since we will be recreating our masjid experience, we be listening to Mishari Rashid on our Quran explorer App. For the full guide to how best use these Juz specific activities, please check out the main page of the Quran Activities for kids.
Surah Baqarah Activities
Ayah-tul Kursi
Juz 3 of the Quran begins with one of the most special and renown Ayahs of Surah Baqarah, Ayah-tul Kursi. So, unlike the other two days, I would like to start by recommending a memorization activity.
Memorization
Ayah-tul Kursi, ayah 255 of Surah Baqarahhas so many benefits. Therefore, I highly recommend encouraging the children to memorize it. For younger children, you can recite it for them a few times. Little children are quick to memorize. They may surprise you. The older children can memorize this ayah and recite it at bedtime. To make the activity a little more fun, have the children compete to see who can memorize it first. The winner gets a small prize.
Word for Word of Ayah-tul Kursi from Surah Baqarah
For older children or those that have already memorized the ayah, you can have them learn the word by word meaning. Click HERE to download the flashcards with word by word meaning of ayah-tul Kursi. Print two copies of the flashcards, preferably in cardstock. Use one copy as an answer sheet. You’ll want to cut this copy of the flashcards with both the arabic and english text. The second copy should be cut separating english and arabic text for the kids to match up. Laminate the flashcards for longevity.
Sadaqa
Ayah 261-274 of Surah Baqarah talk about saqada and giving in charity. Spend a few minutes talking about the correct way to give charity. Use the ayahs as points to discuss, such as 267 which mentions spending of the good things. We are quick to give away the spoiled and torn things in charity or those things that we no longer find useful. How often do we give something we like? Here are two activities you can use to help children understand sadaqa.
Sadaqa Jar
This is a simple activity, but one that can be expanded for older children. Download and print the color-in mason jar label HERE. Have the children color in one of the two designs or let them create their own. Use a mason jar or any jar or box which can safely hold money. Please be careful if you have little ones as coins can be dangerous. Choose a set amount of time in which to collect sadaqa. Depending on the age of the child, you may choose to do one day, one week or a month (Ramadan is a great time for this activity). You can also ask other family members to contribute if the kids are young. After collecting the sadaqa, allow the children to physically put the sadaqa in a masjid sadaqa box or during Eid prayer. This may not be possible during the quarantine, but there may be other opportunities given the circ*mstances. Allowing a child to experience this will have much more of an impact than simply telling them that you will donate the money.
This is an extention of the activity for older children
Have children 7 and older earn money from which they would take out sadaqa. Depending on the age of the child, they may choose to do a car wash, help out a family member with a task (not to be confused with chores), make and sell bracelets, have a lemonade stand sale, set up a small business, etc. If your child is interested in setting up any type of transaction, help them write a contract. Ayah 282 in Surah Baqarah mentions the importance of having a contract. The ayahs following give a little more insight in this matter, but for now, a simple contract will do. Keep it simple, but be sure to reference the ayah so the children understand that this is all explained in the Quran.
Donate Something you Like or Love
Allah mentions in ayah 267 in Surah Baqarah that we should spend from the good things as we would not like it if we were on the receiving end. So, as an exercise to help understand this concept, have the child pick out a toy, item of clothing or anything else from their belongings that they like to donate. After donating, remind them that we must not boast about giving and that inshallah there’s a better reward waiting in Jannah for us. Children of all ages can do this, but please don’t ask them to do more than what they capable of as Allah reminds us in the final ayah of Surah Baqarah.
2:286- Allah does not obligate anyone beyond his capacity.
Surah Al-E-Imran
Common Word Between Us
Surah Al-E-Imran ayah 64 teaches us a little about how to interact with those of other faiths. Living in a country where Islam is not the majority religion, I feel its crucial for children to understand the similarities different faiths have. This will eventually allow them to better understand how to interact with other faiths. So, this is a simple activity to help children understand the similarities between Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. I have written one answer for you that links all 3 religions, but there are other similarities. There is no answer sheet for this activity, but a simple google search will give you plenty of answer suggestions. Download the worksheet activity HERE.
Names to Remember in Surah Al-E-Imran
The last worksheet activity for Juz 3 highlights some of the important names mentioned in the Surah Al-E-Imran. To download this worksheet, please click HERE. Page 1 of the worksheet is a crossword puzzle, and page 2 is the answer sheet.
Memorization
The last and final Activity for Juz 3 is ayah memorization for Surah Al-E-Imran. Ayahs 8 and 9 are both great duas to memorize. Therefore, I highly recommend encouraging the children to memorize it. You can make the activity a little more fun by having the children compete to see who can memorize it, or who can memorize the most number of ayahs for this Juz. The winner gets a small prize.
