The Origin and Success of "Wicked" original musical

The libretto is based on the eponymous novel by Gregory Maguire, the pre-history of the series of books ‘Wizard of Oz’. The music and lyrics were written by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman was responsible for the libretto. Creators in 1995 were inspired by the novel that called for scenic implementation. The product was already purchased by the studio ‘Universal Pictures’ for a film adaptation. Bringing the producer from ‘Universal Pictures’ to work made it possible to create an expensive and bright performance, loved by the audience. The musical managed to recoup its costs in just 15 months after its successful start, and in all subsequent years, it consistently brought profit to creators both on Broadway and on other stages.

Creative Team and Development

Scriptwriters reinterpreted the original plot, making the Sorceress neighbors in their educational institution. For recognition of the plot and characters, the foundation included some musical themes from the same-named movie of 1939. Preparatory work for the show began in the early 2000s. Joe Mantello joined the team as director; the choreographer was Wayne Cilento, a winner of many Tony Awards. Eugene Lee managed to create a beautiful design, positively characterized by all critics without exception.

Broadway Achievements

From the opening night in 2004, the Broadway production collected more than half a million dollars every week, making it a highly profitable venture. The theatrical received three Tonys (out of ten nominations), six Drama Desk Awards, and many other accolades. Successful revenues were demonstrated by British, Australian, German, and Japanese shows, along with performances in Copenhagen, Helsinki, and Amsterdam.

15th Anniversary Celebration

In recent news, "Wicked" celebrated its 15th anniversary with a special NBC concert event, featuring performances by original cast members Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth. This celebration highlighted the musical's enduring popularity and its influence on modern musical theatre.
