John Ford’s 1935 comedy, starring Edward G. Robinson in the double role of Arthur Ferguson Jones, a mild-mannered clerk and would-be writer, and Killer Mannion, a Most Wanted gangster who is also Jones’s look-alike, satirically yet trenchantly embraces a wide range of modern experience, from the political to the intimate. Mistaken for the murderer and wrongly arrested, Jones is nearly crushed by the law before being freed—yet, on the outside, he’s confronted by the criminal, who seeks to usurp the innocent man’s identity and also to make him his sounding board. Ford looks caustically at office life, with its white-collar drudgery and glad-handing overlords, and at the effete trivia that fills Jones’s mild imagination. Mannion is a master of ruses and disguises; his crimes are the city’s luridly alluring form of street theatre, of which breathless tabloid rundowns are the rave reviews. Foreshadowing his own political dramas “The Informer” and “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance,” Ford shows a legal system rendered ineffectual by its own uninspired agents as well as by its rules and scruples, and conjures higher as well as lower varieties of outlaws. With Jean Arthur, as Jones’s spunky and free-spirited colleague, and Donald Meek, as the earnest and befuddled man in the street.(IFC Center; March 1-3)

Clerk Arthur Jones (Edward G. Robinson) lives a dull life until someone realizes that he looks like gangster "Killer" Mannion (also Robinson). After Jones is brought in by the police and his identity is verified, he is given a note to assuage any other suspicious policeman. Jones is hired by a newspaper to write about Mannion and starts dating Wilhelmina Clark (Jean Arthur). However, when Jones returns home one night, Mannion is waiting and demands the note so that he can roam freely.
