1 Recognize Triggers

Understanding what triggers your stress is the first step towards managing it. In the workplace, triggers can range from tight deadlines to challenging interactions with colleagues. By identifying these triggers, you can anticipate stressful situations and prepare yourself mentally. Mindfulness techniques, such as deep breathing or a short walk, can be employed to mitigate the immediate effects of stress. Remember, awareness is your ally; once you know what sets off your stress, you can take proactive measures to address it before it escalates.

2 Set Boundaries

Setting clear boundaries is essential for emotional well-being in the office. It's important to communicate your limits to your colleagues and superiors respectfully but firmly. This might involve delineating work hours, managing expectations for response times to emails, or delegating tasks when your plate is too full. Upholding these boundaries helps prevent burnout and ensures that you have time to recharge, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable work-life balance.

3 Prioritize Tasks

Effective prioritization is key to managing workplace stress. Start by distinguishing between urgent and important tasks. Use tools like to-do lists or digital planners to organize your day, focusing on high-priority items first. This approach not only helps you manage your workload more efficiently but also provides a sense of accomplishment as you complete each task. Remember, trying to tackle everything at once can be overwhelming, so break your workload into manageable chunks.

Many CFOs and controllers think they have a lot to do. They think they have many priorities. “If you have more than 3 priorities, you have none.” This quote from author Jim Collins touches me deeply. I think about why so many finance teams and CFOs are so tense – they just feel pulled in too many directions at the same time. Then you are not a modern CFO.

The reason why we felt frustrated while facing stress is that our mind led us to think of negativity first. I used to be like that as well, so I tried to read as many books as I could in terms of positive mindset. Our subconsciousness need to learn how to think of positive first, so next time when you are facing stress, your brain will tell you that this obstacles is not a bad thing! This is a good way for you to be a better person if you could overcome it.
